Abstract: |
The desk-based assessment considered the archaeological potential of the site, and the likely impact on this of the proposed redevelopment. Probable archaeological deposits and features consisted, in summary, of natural alluvial and peat deposits which may contain evidence of both the environment, particularly river levels and human activity in the area from the prehistoric period to the first millennium AD. There was limited potential for evidence of medieval land reclamation, drainage or agriculture and for 18th century and later structures. The principle impact of the proposed works, which would involve the demolition of all standing buildings on the site and the construction of a new residential development, would consist of localised destruction of surviving deposits within the area of the new building footprint. The report concluded that further investigation (field evaluation) may be necessary to determine the exact nature and depth of such deposits. [Au(abr)] |
