Abstract: |
An archaeological assessment was undertaken of the sites of six proposed fish passes along the River Kennet. The study established that the floodplain and lower terrace in the Lower Kennet Valley were particularly rich in Mesolithic, Late Bronze Age, Late Iron Age and Romano-British sites sealed beneath alluvium. The channels dug for the fish passes may be of sufficient depth to penetrate the alluvium and expose any Mesolithic deposits present, later prehistoric remains may also be present. Later water mills existed at the six sites as well, the remains of some still being extant. It was considered possible that deposits of environmental importance, including peat might be encountered.
