Abstract: |
An area of land at Marine Drive, Black Rock, on the cliffs above the Brighton Marina complex, had been identified as a potential location for the construction of 16 dwellings. An examination of the SMR records revealed a number of historic buildings, archaeological sites and find spots within a one kilometre radius of the proposed development. A desk-based assessment had established that the proposed development area had an overall low-moderate potential for containing in situ archaeological deposits. The areas most likely to produce archaeological remains were the south-eastern and south-western sectors of the site, where post-medieval buildings were known to have existed. Significant potential also existed for the survival of Bronze Age and Roman burials within the remaining area. It was recommended that further archaeological investigation, in the form of trial-trenching, be undertaken to ascertain the presence or absence of archaeological features within the site, and the depth, nature and condition of any surviving remains.
