Abstract:
The evaluation revealed a high density of archaeological remains lying within the proposed development area, with ten of the eleven trenches producing archaeological finds or features. These ranged in period from potentially Mesolithic/Early Neolithic, through Romano-British and medieval to the post-medieval and were generally represented by features cutting or overlying the natural. The earliest feature, a double ditch, dated back to at least to the Romano-British period, if not the prehistoric period. A soil horizon in the eastern half of the development area also produced prehistoric artefacts. Several pits, visible as depressions in the field surface, were recorded. These may have represented the 'Marl Pits' evidence from the field name, and could have dated back to the 13th century, although some had clearly been filled in later on in the post-medieval period. These may have related to the extraction for clay for pottery making, or perhaps for brick making in the post-medieval period. [Au]
