Abstract:
Two 25m by 1.8m trial trenches were excavated in advance of proposed redevelopment of the site. The eastern trench, Trench 2, revealed an undated north-south ditch, containing very small quantities of residual abraded prehistoric pottery and burnt flint, cutting into the natural brickearth. Several tree roots had also disturbed the natural. This ditch feature was thought most likely to have represented a late medieval or post-medieval field boundary on the basis of its parallel alignment to Harlington High Street. The western trench, Trench 1, was truncated at its southern end by a large pit filled with waterlain clay. A stake hole and a small pit containing very small quantities of residual abraded prehistoric pottery were recorded at the northern end of Trench 1. Overlying the natural fills of these features was a redeposited layer of brickearth with 19th century pottery inclusions and a residual retouched notched flake. These features were thought most likely to be post-medieval in date. [Au(abr)]
