Abstract: |
The study demonstrated the importance of the Lewin's Mead/Nelson Street area to the understanding of Bristol's post-Norman development. Archaeological evidence had shown that pre-Conquest occupation probably extended well beyond the 'traditional' Saxon town. By the middle of the 13th century an extensive development of houses and shops had taken place within the study area. The settlement of the area was probably influenced by the presence of the Frome and Monken Bridges, which provided access across the River Frome for those wishing to enter the town, thus providing merchants and craftsmen with an early opportunity for trade. The study area remained relatively unaltered until the development of industrial 'units' in the 17th century. Further development was undertaken in the 19th century when the Frome was culverted to prevent flooding which created a new street, Rupert Street. The archaeological potential of the site was deemed extremely high and extensive archaeological investigations were recommended. [AIP] |
