Abstract: |
The area of the watching brief lay immediately west of the medieval Hanging Bridge, a Scheduled Ancient Monument. A deep excavation close to the bridge for a new retaining wall revealed the back-filled cellarage of the early 19th century Tower Hotel, demolished in 1900. Below this, both within this excavation and an adjoining test pit, evidence was found for levelling up of the ditch to a level built upon in the early 18th century. [Au(abr)] |
