Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of an area proposed for road improvements identified that several post-medieval sites would be affected by the proposals. These included traces of two field boundaries visible on aerial photographs, two abandoned hollow ways, and earthworks caused by 19th century quarrying. Ploughed out earthworks at the site, which were visible on aerial photographs, represented buildings shown on a Tithe map of 1838. Substantial quantities of building material had been observed within ploughsoil in the vicinity of these buildings. Further post-medieval buildings had also lain in the area, and the present road was tentatively thought to follow the course of a Roman road. [AIP] |
