Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in relation to proposals for the development of an office building. The site was located in a priority archaeological zone as defined by the Local Planning Authority. The site's archaeological potential for the prehistoric periods was thought to be low. The site's archaeological potential for the Roman period was thought to be low to moderate; some sherds of residual Roman pottery and tile had been recovered from the site in a residual context. The site was believed to have lain in backlands in the late medieval period. 11th to 13th century pottery was recovered from the site, though possibly in a later context. The extreme south west of the site was believed to have been built up from c.1650 with a building later known as 'Mitre Cottage' and part of an ancillary range to the 'Mitre' Public house. The remainder of the site appeared to have been largely undeveloped until c.1900 when a new building, possibly a garage was built north of 'Mitre Cottage'. The remains of 'Mitre Cottage', the ancillary range and the 'garage' appeared to have been uncovered during an archaeological investigation in 1989. [Au(adp)]
