Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken on the site of Bitham Mill where it was proposed to convert Listed Buildings and undertake new development to their rear and along the frontage of Alfred Street. Further work on the standing buildings on the site was recommended to clarify the extent of industrial and archaeological remains. Those buildings of greatest potential, but not necessarily of greatest architectural value, were the 1803 water factory and the adjacent 1829 engine house which included remains of a medieval and post-medieval fulling mill in its basement. An archaeological evaluation was also recommended in view of the likely impact of any development on possible remains of Town Farm thought to exist on the site. [AIP] |
