Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a housing development identified that a 19th century brickworks had lain on part of the site. Artefacts found in the area included a Mesolithic flint blade, a Neolithic flint flake and two Late Bronze Age spearheads. Two prehistoric ring ditches and several Romano-British sites, including roads, farmsteads and a substantial settlement, had also been recorded. A possible 1st century AD pottery kiln site lay c. 100m to the south east of the proposed development, whilst the site itself may have contained part of the circuit of an early 10th century fortification. It was concluded that there was a potential for undiscovered archaeological sites to exist within the proposal area. [AIP] |
