Abstract: |
Permission to develop the site for affordable housing and a retail unit with associated parking was granted, subject to archaeological investigation in advance of and during groundwork. A small trench was excavated between two cellars along the street frontage, but only modern features and undisturbed natural brick-earth were recorded. Observations of foundation excavations revealed two Saxon, four medieval and five undated features. The finds included middle Saxon and medieval pottery, burnt daub, iron objects, iron working waste and animal bones, as well as post-medieval and modern material. A report on the faunal remains was included. The high proportion of medieval to middle Saxon features was relatively unusual in Hamwic - it was comparable to the adjoining site (62-65 St. Mary Street), where six middle Saxon and 12 medieval features were recorded, but contrasted with other nearby sites (notably the Voluntary Action Centre and Kingsland Market), where no medieval features were found.
