Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out in advance of a car park development within former nursery gardens. A house had first been recorded at the park in 1466, and the garden was established in the first half of the 19th century. Topographic survey of the site revealed that considerable change had occurred since the production of a map in 1947, whilst excavation of trial trenches revealed that the map had been exceptionally accurate. The observed layout was probably contemporary with the construction of a cottage, which had an 1864 date stone. Flowerbeds and metalled pathways were recorded, and 19th or 20th century pottery was found. It was concluded that the latest phase of the garden was probably the only surviving archaeological phase.
