Abstract: |
Excavations were carried out within Burnham Cattle Pound, a Listed Building which was due to be Scheduled. The pound was first recorded on a map of 1796. The excavations revealed a brick culvert of broadly 18th century date, constructed along the line of a former roadside ditch. 18th century pottery and the skull of a small horse were recovered from the ditch. The ground level within the pound was found to have been reduced, apparently to facilitate the construction of the pound and culvert. Overlying made ground was a possible construction surface, presumably relating to the erection of the pound walls. A water pipe thrust through the south wall of the pound, perhaps during the 1940s, was shown to continue north, running parallel to the west side of the culvert. [Au(abr)] |
