Abstract: |
The works comprised the excavation of four trial trenches. Bedrock was found directly below modern deposits in the two trenches closest to the road frontage, indicating significant truncation in this area. This truncation was likely to have been caused by mining activity. Two pits, probably related to this mining activity, were identified. Three large pits were identified in the two trenches towards the rear of the site. These contained fills of colliery waste and were related to early 19th century coal mining activity on the site.
