Abstract:
An appraisal of the archaeological potential of the Agreed Alignment of the proposed Aylesbury Northern Link Road was undertaken. It followed on from earlier studies submitted in October 1996, January 1997 and September 1997 and was based upon data contained in the 1996 Stage 1 and 2 study. Some 34 sites were known to exist within or immediately adjacent to the road footprint. Although the physical integrity of two Scheduled Ancient Monuments identified near the periphery of the original Stage 1 and 2 study area would not be affected by the proposed road, an adverse impact to the setting of one of these scheduled sites, the medieval earthworks at Quarrnedon, was identified. The majority of the other known sites identified within the initial study were also avoided by the proposed route. On the basis of present knowledge, there was no other known archaeoloigcal sites along the route of the road which would have acted as a major constraint on road development. The report recommended that detailed field studies, including fieldwalking, geophysical survey and trial trenching, would need to be carried out before a full consideration of the archaeological impact of the proposals could be undertaken and before appropriate mitigation measures could be devised in detail [Au(adp)]
