Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a housing development identified that a large amount of Mesolithic material had been found in the general vicinity, but that relatively few artefacts of Neolithic, Bronze Age or Iron Age date had been recorded. The density of recorded Roman finds was also low, although the site of a highly dubious Roman building had been noted. The town of Reigate, founded in the 12th century, lay nearby, and findspots associated with this settlement and its hinterland had been recorded. However, the site had almost certainly been located within agricutural land during the medieval period, and until as recently as the 19th century. Geotechnical investigation of the site had identified a small, deep excavation. This may have resulted from late medieval or post-medieval quarrying, but was more likely to have been caused by the late post-medieval to early modern extraction of fine sand for glass-making and building. It was concluded that the site had a low archaeological potential, and that the probable quarrying would have had a severe but localised impact on any archaeological deposits present. It was recommended that no further archaeological work should be undertaken. [AIP]
