Abstract: |
The results of this programme of archaeological investigation cast considerable doubt upon the existence of the large barrow cemetery as originally suggested. The excavation of a trench within possible barrow no.5 and the geophysical survey of parts of possible barrows no.4 and 5 revealed no features that were consistent with those commonly associated with round barrows. On this basis and the unremarkable results obtained from fieldwalking, it appeared unlikely that possible barrow nos. 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 represented round barrows. Field name evidence as recorded in the Tithe Appointment suggested that at least mound no.2 represented the remains of a prehistoric burial mound. The only other possible barrow to survive as a slight earthwork was no.14, which prior to the most recent episode of hedgebank demolition had stood considerably higher.[Au(abr)] |
