Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation, consisting of two trial trenches totalling 48m, was undertaken prior to proposed residential development. No archaeological remains other than the very recent were encountered. Iron Age and Middle Saxon settlement areas were now known to the south of West Fen Rd, and up to the slope to the east on the north side of the road. The south side of West Fen Rd also contained dense later Saxon and medieval settlement remains. These, however, did not continue to the north of the road where the Middle Saxon settlement appeared not to follow the same development pattern - the area may have been given over to agriculture at an early date. When seen in conjunction with the pipeline excavation to the north and west it was unlikely that any major archaeological remains would be encountered within the site. [Au(adp)] |
