Abstract:
The archaeological assessment was produced in response to proposals for an alternative route between the A413 Buckingham Road and the A41 Aston Clinton Road. The study concluded with a comparison between the outer route originally assessed and the two alternative alignments of the inner route. A number of areas of archaeological potential were identified along the two new proposed alternative routes including a medieval or later cropmark enclosure overlying ridge and furrow, (affected by both proposals), a possible Romano-British/medieval/Saxon settlement, (indicated by pottery retrieved during fieldwalking), an extensive multiperiod settlement at Bierton (only affected by the inner route), possible Romano-British sites in the Coppice Estate and Stocklake area, two moated sites, one of which was a Scheduled Ancient Monument, a shrunken medieval village, the site of an early mill and a Roman road. The report emphasised that further studies would need to be undertaken before a final decision could be taken over the route. [AIP]
