Abstract: |
The earthworks at the castle included two contiguous enclosures: the northern enclosure, a ringwork, was formerly a medieval royal residence which appeared to have been landscaped and probably formed part of a garden feature that included parkland to the north. The southern enclosure comprised a double bank and ditch which had been extensively quarried in the southwest: in the southeast modern housing and a farm track obscured the earthwork. Additional features that were surveyed included a hollow-way to the west of the castle, and a massive ditch in the east which had been variously interpreted as a deer park boundary and town defences.
