Abstract: |
An evaluation and subsequent watching brief was carried out. The two evaluation trenches were situated to the east of the original 1930s bus station building. Excavation of the trenches revealed a number of 18th century cellars with cobbled floors; the associated houses had been demolished in 1938 for the original bus station construction. Examination of the soil horizons, into which the cellars had been cut, strongly suggested that the area was levelled before house construction began and a drainage ditch was encountered, possibly associated with this period. Below the levelling deposits, isolated segments of palaeochannel deposits were encountered. The evaluation was followed by the watching brief on the main imprint of the new bus station. This revealed only demolition rubble, as the new development had been designed to have concrete raft foundations that impinged only very slightly on the underlying deposits. [Au(abr)] |
