Abstract: |
The pipeline route traversed an area of dense archaeological activity dating from the prehistoric period onwards. A number of medieval sites lay in the vicinity of the route, including several farmsteads and the remains of at least two castles. The route cut through a number of roads and trackways, many of which preserved earlier surfaces beneath them. The sites of parish boundary stones were identified. Some of the fields within the floodplain showed evidence of channels relating to watermeadow systems. Along the stream itself, the remains of weirs and sluices related to mills, watermeadows and other activities may also be uncovered. [Au(adp)] |
