Abstract: |
Documentary, cartographic and pictorial sources combined to demonstrate the importance of Leigh-on-Sea as an historical port. The place-name first appeared in the Domesday Book. It was an important fishing centre from at least the 13th century, and a major ship building site from the 16th. Although no direct evidence relating to Strand Wharf's role in the early development of the town could be found, it was probable that the wharf played a central part in the town's prominence. The extent of surviving archaeological remains from these early periods was not known. [Au(abr)] |
