Abstract:
The desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed development of the site. The site was not located in an area of high archaeological potential as defined by the Local Planning Authority. The site's archaeological potential for the early prehistoric periods was thought to be low. The sites archaeological potential for the Iron Age period was thought to be low to moderate. The site's archaeological potential for the Roman period was defined as low to moderate. The site's archaeological potential for the Saxon, early medieval and post-medieval periods was low. The site's archaeological potential for the medieval period was defined as low to moderate. Previous land use and development was unlikely to have had a significant archaeological impact though some localised impacts had clearly occurred. Although the proposed new houses and associated road and services would have only a localised archaeological impact, the cumulative archaeological impact of site clearance and new development was likely to be severe. In view of the conclusions of the report, and the potential impact of the proposed development it was recommended that an archaeological monitoring exercise be conducted during construction groundworks.
