Abstract: |
The site came to the attention of archaeologists when the farmer reported a stone chamber revealed during the construction of a new shed on the site of an earthwork mound. Half of the mound had been removed, with a section through the middle of the mound being left exposed. The stone feature comprised two chambers, divided by a drystone wall and was situated about two thirds of the way down a large pit. The section through the pit and stone feature was cleaned and a narrow trench excavated at its base to investigate its depth and character. The stone feature remained enigmatic. The pottery finds suggested an 18th or 19th century origin. The clearest evidence for the origin of the pit and mound came from analysis of the geology 1:10000 sheet. This showed two coal seams merging together just north of Hill Top Farm with the western coal seam running almost exactly through the site of the pit and mound. It was therefore quite probable that the pit was related to coal mining activity. The earthwork mound could have represented spoil from the mining. The pit itself may have had a central shaft which was not located by the rapid archaeological investigation. The infilled hollow just north of the exposed section may have been the site of a mineshaft with the spoil deposited all around it to give a typical doughnut affect. [Au(adp)] |
