Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken as a condition of the planning permission, prior to the redevelopment of the site. The evaluation consisted of four 15m by 4m trenches. The evaluation revealed square and circular brick lined features dating to the 18th and 19th centuries associated with east-west aligned walls and boundary ditches. The brick lined features truncated a garden/agricultural soil horizon, which in turn sealed linear features cut into the natural brickearth horizon. Dating for the early features was limited but there were indications that they were late medieval in date. The results of the evaluation indicated that there was good survival of post-medieval and medieval archaeology across the majority of the site and it was therefore recommended that an archaeological excavation be undertaken.
