Abstract:
The application area comprised eleven fields. Cropmarks recorded on aerial photographs indicated a dense complex of archaeological features were present at the site. Trial excavations carried out by Oxford Archaeological Unit in 1991 had identified 14 sites of archaeological interest within the application area and these dated from the prehistoric to the medieval periods. The excavations also showed significant damage to archaeological deposits caused by ploughing. Fluxgate gradiometry survey was carried out as part of a process to produce a mitigation strategy for carrying out further archaeological observations during topsoil stripping. This assessment was being undertaken by John Samuels Archaeological Consultants in advance of proposed quarrying. An initial scan of the application area found a generally low level of background response and few anomalies of potential archaeological interest were identified. Due to the limited number of suitable targets, detailed survey was carried out in sample areas that coincided with areas of archaeological interest identified by cropmark evidence and excavation. In addition, apparently 'blank' areas of the application area were also sampled. Detailed survey recorded evidence of settlement remains in two locations which were previously identified as areas of intensive prehistoric occupation. Possible archaeological anomalies were identified elsewhere but were recorded in isolation or were poorly defined. [Au(abr)]
