Abstract: |
Five trial trenches were excavated across Site 1 as part of a scheme of archaeological trial trenching undertaken in advance of large-scale office development. Site 1 covered an area of c.7ha, within which several linear anomalies had been identified by geophysical survey. The evaluation indicated that the majority of features located by the geophysical survey reflected natural variations in the underlying sandstone geology rather than archaeology. Two features were identified in one trench; a linear feature and a sub-circular patch of burning. Upon further investigation both features were identified as being of recent date. In addition to the evaluation, a geotechnical investigation was undertaken. In view of the absence of any features of potential archaeological significance in Site 1, it was recommended that no further archaeological work was required beyond a periodic inspection of the topsoil stripping.
