Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a retail development identified that sites and findspots dating from the Palaeolithic to the post-medieval period had been recorded close to the proposal area. These included the perhaps nationally important Great Pan Farm Palaeolithic gravel deposits, as well as a small number of Mesolithic and Neolithic findspots, a probable hoard of Bronze Age axes, and a cluster of Late Iron Age and Roman sites. No evidence for Saxon activity had been recorded, with the exception of an imprecisely located find of a Saxon sceatta, associated with a Roman coin. Medieval and post-medieval material had been recorded, although much of the current knowledge of these periods was derived from cartographic and documentary sources. One known archaeological site, Ford Mill, which was originally constructed in the medieval period, lay within the proposal area. A single Scheduled Ancient Monument, Newport Roman Villa, lay within the study area. It was concluded that the site had potential for Palaeolithic material, palaeoenvironmental evidence from gravel deposits and former channels of the River Medina, remains of prehistoric and Roman date, and remnants of the mill. A programme of field evaluation was proposed. [AIP]
