Abstract: |
An desk-based assessment was undertaken to be submitted as part of an application for planning consent for the redevelopment of the St Michael's School site, also known as the Greycoat Hospital Lower School. The archaeological/palaeo-environmental potential of the site resulted primarily from its lying on, or immediately adjacent to, the old course of the River Westbourne, which now runs within a culvert, and is known as the Ranelagh Sewer. Borehole investigation of the site was monitored by an archaeologist, and confirmed the cartographic evidence that deposits relating to the course of the river were confined to a narrow strip along the Holbein Place frontage. It seemed the centre of the channel may have been scoured to improve water flow at some time in the past, removing any peat deposits that may have originally existed. The report concluded that the site had extremely limited potential for the survival of deposits of archaeological or palaeo-environmental significance. [Au(adp)] |
