Abstract: |
A total of 13 test pits were excavated along the route of the new water main in order to identify and locate existing services and to establish the nature and extent of any archaeological remains. Eleven test pits were excavated along Plessey Road and two on the grass verge to the south of the road at the west end. In the eleven pits a clay silt deposit with ash inclusions was identified up to 1m deep, this was the ballast material used to construct the Plessey Wagonway. No evidence of the track-bed was found. The material was truncated by modern services and overlain by levelling deposits for the road and grass verge. In the two remaining pits natural clay subsoil was found immediately below the modern deposits. [Au(adp)] |
