Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at a proposed development site. Medieval river defences and ditches had been excavated nearby, and early post-medieval bear-baiting rings, playhouses and inns had occupied the area. During the evaluation, a medieval chalk footing was recorded. This was overlain by foundation walls for five buildings dating from the medieval period to the 19th century. Robbed-out 16th-17th century foundations may have represented the corner of the Bear Garden bear-baiting arena. 17th century glasshouse waste and a possible 19th century kiln or furnace were observed.
