Abstract:
A desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a retail development revealed that the site lay adjacent to a medieval fishpond known as the King's Pool, which had originally been created by post-glacial floodwaters. A 14th century mill had been powered by water from the pool, which had been dammed. Examination of sediments in the King's Pool area had revealed environmental evidence for forest clearance commencing in the Early Neolithic, followed by Bronze Age and Iron Age activity. A causeway which possibly dated to the Iron Age was believed to have followed the line of the old Lammascote Road, and could therefore be affected by any works at the site. Roman pottery and four-post structures had been excavated in Stafford, and pottery had been produced in the town from the 9th century. Test-pits at the site had revealed peaty deposits which may have related to strata in the King's Pool area, and had encountered incinerated waste containing late 19th century artefacts. It was concluded that an evaluation should be carried out. [AIP]
