Abstract: |
Phase 1 of the Domestic Range Undercroft conversion programme involved archaeological recording in three areas, of which this area was one. A new service duct was made running from the northeast end of the chapel undercroft (Boiler House annexe) along the main corridor northeastwards as far as the former Silver Vault. This involved the cutting of a number of new openings through medieval and later walls. In the northeastern window opening in the Great Hall on the river frontage, investigations to re-route a heating pipe encountered a length of wooden conduit containing electrical cables beneath the flagstones. It was concluded that the wiring belonged to the late 19th century organ whose console formerly stood in this location. A basic record was made of the work undertaken in connection with the creation of the new ducts.[AIP] |
