Abstract:
The watching brief was undertaken during the construction of a lavatory and kitchen facilities in response to a condition upon the faculty. The majority of the trench was excavated to a depth that did not coincide with the top of the burial horizon. Only a relatively small number of disarticulated bones were encountered. No structural remains were encountered other than a brick burial vault (containing at least one coffin), the brick arch entrance to a large family vault and an aperture to a burial vault. A chest monument and stone plinth stood over a large brick-vaulted family burial chamber. The hand excavation of the trench intersected a jumble of late features in the vicinity of the NW buttress of the tower. These included the top of a brick wall, possibly associated in some way with the vault. A brown clay drainage pipe crossed the trench; it was likely that the trench for this pipe had been cut through the corner of the vault. Yet another trench had been cut through this area for the water pipe 11. Further substantial disturbance had been caused by the introduction of the lightning conductor into the ground in the same area. A number of disarticulated human bones had been packed back into on e of these trenches. [Au(adp)]
