Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of a proposed residential development site identified that a number of crop- and soil-mark features had been recorded both on and near the site. The majority of features comprised poorly defined linear marks, possibly representing the remnants of field boundaries of unknown date. Two large assemblages of Mesolithic and Neolithic artefacts had been found in the vicinity, and a Bronze Age saucer barrow lay immediately to the north-east. Iron Age enclosures and occupation had been found to the east, and a Roman road formed the eastern boundary of the site. A probable clay pit and a number of chalk pits had been recorded to the south. It was concluded that the site lay within an area which had been subject to sustained and intensive activity from the Palaeolithic onwards. [AIP] |
