Abstract:
An archaeological observation and recording exercise was undertaken July to September 1997. An additional phase of excavation was undertaken in March 2000 on an adjacent part of the site (Plot 4). The 1997 exercise consisted of observation and recording of the topsoil stripping of the extension to Works Roads, adjacent service trenches and areas designated for landscaping. It revealed a main concentration of archaeological features: a ring gully with a central crouched inhumation; a section of a 20m diameter ring ditch; a deep lozenge-shaped feature (which may have been an unfinished ring ditch or an associated monumental feature); and a cluster of pits around the main features. The features had not yet been closely dated but a date in the earlier prehistoric period (Neolithic/Bronze Age) was certain, the struck flint assemblage suggested a Late Neolithic date. A truncated ditch of similar date and an isolated, undated post hole were also observed. In addition an isolated grave tentatively dated to the medieval period was recorded. The excavation (2000) revealed the north-eastern extent of the main ring ditch to survive, to the north of its truncation by a large gas pipe. Evidence of an early northern entrance was identified.
