Abstract: |
The desk-based archaeological assessment was undertaken in relation to a proposed development. The site was currently formed by open rough ground and had no standing buildings. No previous work had been carried out on the site. The site did not lie within a Conservation Area and contained no SAMs. There were no Listed Buildings within or immediately adjacent to the site boundary. The assessment indicated that the site lay in an area where probable Iron Age/Romano-British field systems had been recorded. It also lay close to the SAM of Monk Bretton Priory and a number of other medieval remains. Although, the site was situated in a prime industrial area, which was greatly affected by the Industrial Revolution (with a number of industrial works lying to the north-east above Tumbling Lane), the site of the proposed development itself appeared to be previously undeveloped. The proposed scheme involved the construction of 123 dwellings with landscaping and access roads and included an area of open space in the centre. Further mitigation in the form of geophysical survey and trial trenching may be necessary to better understand the ground conditions, the nature, depth and quality of survival of any archaeological remains.
