Abstract:
An evaluation, comprising earthwork survey, limited excavation and augering for waterlogged archaeological and palaeoenvironmental remains, was undertaken for a series of earthworks at Bothamstall Bog. A single trench, centred on a sub-rectangular, slightly raised platform with surrounding ditch and associated bank with hollow on its eastern side identified that ploughing had truncated the mound whilst the ditch was shallow with a peaty fill. The platform and external bank consisted of redeposited sands and gravel which contained heat-affected stones and charcoal, possible from an earlier archaeological site within the vicinity. A buried soil horizon was found preserved below the redeposited material of the raised platform, but did not appear to be preserved beneath the adjacent bank. Three sherds of medieval pottery and three plain tile fragments were retrieved from the platform surface and surrounding ditch. Augering did not located any significant waterlogged deposits, but did indicate that the hollow on the eastern side of the earthworks was the result of human activity. [Au(adp)]
