Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of an extension to a sandpit identified that Early Bronze Age flints and a Mesolithic site which had yielded tranchet axes, cores, flakes and microlithic debris had been recorded within the proposal area. Further Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age artefacts had been recovered in the surrounding area, whilst a Neolithic long barrow and a prehistoric earthwork, possibly the site of a hillfort, had been recorded. A World War II pillbox lay at the edge of the development site. It was recommended that the stability of this should be ensured and its fabric protected during mineral working. Evaluation of the site by trial trenching, test-pitting and geophysical survey was also recommended. [AIP] |
