Abstract: |
The study area occupied part of the north-western quarter of the Roman town, and included the town defences and a small area beyond the defences. It probably contained areas where buildings fronted onto streets. There was little evidence of the nature of medieval layers although the north and east of the study area lay in the area of the proposed early medieval settlement. There was also suggestion that a bailey of the medieval castle extended into the study area. Pits and dumps, and wells represented post-medieval archaeology to the rear of properties fronting Castle Street and Cricklade Street, and the remains of a pond at the corner of Sheep Street.
