Abstract: |
An archaeological investigation was undertaken at the site in response to a reported find made during sewer diversion works. The investigation revealed the waterlogged basal part of a composite timber well structure consisting of a lining of two casks enclosed by a suspended joist and plank floor. Set vertically into the cask lining was an octagonal sectioned, bored wooden pipe which projected through the floor and extended upwards beyond the limit of excavation. Finds from the fill of the construction cut suggested a mid to later 18th century date, and those from a deposit accumulated within the pipe during its use, of a similar date, suggested that the use of the structure may have been short-lived.
