Abstract: |
A desk-based appraisal was undertaken in response to a planning condition for the redevelopment of the site. Excavation in 1968-69 was limited to one range of a much larger building, which was interpreted as forming part of the archbishop's private apartments. The topographic and other information, contained in late 17th century leases, suggested that the surviving structures possibly included the gatehouse and a kitchen range. The 1968-69 excavations found only ten sherds of pottery of c.650-850 date, but did recover traces of minor pre-Conquest structures. This, together with the presence of an 11th century apsidal chapel, might have implied some pre-Conquest settlement around the site and implied a high archaeological potential. Deposits and features ranging from the Anglo-Saxon to the post-medieval periods may be encountered. Although development in the 18th and 19th centuries may well have disturbed any earlier deposits this was likely to have been relatively shallow in depth, and significant archaeological deposits could exist below any part of the site.
