Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation comprising a total of seven trial trenches was undertaken at Adwick-le-Street, near Doncaster in advance of a proposed development adjacent to the A1 motorway. The trenches were positioned over potential features previously identified from cropmark evidence and geophysical survey. Several enclosure ditches were located and investigated. Those in the north-east area of the site in particular were demonstrated to be of substantial size and may have originally been cut in the later prehistoric period. Limited structural activity on the site was suggested by the presence of at least one posthole and also by a concentration of post-medieval building material recovered from the topsoil in the northern area of the site.
