Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken as part of a pre-application enquiry. The proposed development of the site comprised a new access road, residential accommodation and associated services. The assessment found that the site lay in an area characterised by spot finds of prehistoric date, together with a high status Roman villa nearby. A suspected minor Roman road also extended through the vicinity, though its course was unknown. During the Middle Ages, the area probably lay within the king's deer park, attached to the royal palace which existed to the west of the village. The association with park status did not necessarily preclude the presence of agriculture, though there was little evidence to the contrary and settlement may not have spread beyond the confines of the historic village core. After enclosure in the 17th and 18th centuries, the land was used primarily as pasture. The assessment area formed the truncated remnant of a much larger field which was extensively built over from the late 1930s with new houses. No archaeological finds were recorded from the site itself. [Au(abr)]
