Abstract: |
Two test pits were excavated in order to investigate two mounds identified from aerial photographs, which had been interpreted as possible redhills, mounds of fired debris originating from salt production. Archaeological remains in the area included duck decoy ponds, redhills and oyster pits. The mounds were found to be man-made features comprised of redeposited clay and silts; the fine powdery 'red earth' which would be expected in a redhill was not present. It was concluded that the mounds were probably the remnant of another form of salt production carried out within the marsh. [Au(adp)] |
