Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed residential redevelopment of the site. The site was thought to have a low or moderate archaeological potential for the prehistoric periods and for the Roman period, a good archaeological potential for the Saxon and medieval periods and very good archaeological potential for the post-medieval period. Post depositional impacts on the site varied from moderate to very severe. The proposed development was likely to have a severe but localised impact on any archaeological deposits which might occur through the construction of new footings and service runs. The new development, however, incorporated a new courtyard area beneath which preservation in situ of the archaeological deposits could be achieved. The report therefore recommended that an archaeological evaluation be undertaken prior to the commencement of construction works. This should be targeted along the High Street frontage. [Au(adp)] |
