Abstract:
An archaeological desktop assessment and field reconnaissance was undertaken of the route of a proposed pipeline corridor running between Thornton Steward and Sowden Beck. Five sites of archaeological significance were recorded as a result of the assessment including medieval field systems adjacent to the site of a medieval chapel at Danby Grange (Site 1) and to the south of the A6108 between Jervaulx Abbey and East Witton (Site 2), a linear embankment (Site 3), the site of a possible medieval Hall (Site 4) and a trackway and associated settlement close to Sowden Beck (Site 5). In order to mitigate the impact of the corridor on these sites a watching brief was recommended to record any features of potential archaeological significance that might be identified. A minor amendment to the corridor at Site 5 was also recommended. [Au]
