Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a housing development identified that archaeological finds and sites dating from a range of periods had been recorded in the surrounding area. Evidence included a Palaeolithic flint scraper, Mesolithic and Neolithic flints, a number of barrows and an Iron Age banjo enclosure. Roman finds, an Anglo-Saxon cemetery and a number of medieval buildings had also been recorded. It was concluded that the site lay within an area of considerable archaeological potential, and that an evaluation should be carried out. It was noted that the north-east corner had formerly been occupied by a reservoir, the infill of which had a depth of up to 8m, but that the remainder of the site appeared to have remained undisturbed for a considerable period of time.
